OnPrem is Now Qvest!

Ashley Budkte

Senior Engineer
Austin, TX

Why did you join OnPrem?

I was attracted to the idea of working for a smaller company where you feel empowered to effect change. I was also attracted to the culture of learning and continuous improvement that is at the core of the Innovation & Development Center (IDC).

Describe what you do at OnPrem.

I’m a Senior Engineer, so my main responsibilities are to interpret client requirements, write code, problem solve, and collaborate with other engineers. My focus is backend, which means I’m often writing code that runs behind the scenes.  Most often I work on Java Spring Boot applications, but recently I have been involved with a project that primarily uses AWS technologies.

What do you like most about working at the IDC?

The culture of learning and continuous improvement. There are many opportunities for professional development at the IDC. We have regular “Prof Dev” sessions where employees share/present on technical topics. We have a book club that rotates between books that are highly technical and books that focus on soft skills. I’ve also had the opportunity to attend several technical conferences that I find really engaging. And I’ve been able to mentor less senior engineers, which I find to be a rewarding challenge and chance to push myself to grow as well.

Describe what a typical day looks like for you.

This is what a typical day looks like:

  • Daily stand-up meeting where everyone on my project team communicates what they are working on and if anything is blocking them.
  • Frequent communication with Product to make sure I’m interpreting their requirements correctly.
  • Write, test, and deploy plenty of code.
  • Create architectural diagrams to help communicate & estimate upcoming work (or to document work that was already done).
  • Perform code reviews for my peers.
  • Collaborate with other engineers (oftentimes we pair program).
  • Keep an eye out for new technology or tools that can make my job easier and/or make me more efficient.

What do you enjoy most about working at OnPrem?

OnPrem definitely values its culture and puts a lot of resources towards building a strong and fun environment. I also appreciate the flat and transparent nature of the company. There’s no politics or hidden agenda here. The partners are very open about company goals and what they expect from employees. They are also readily accessible if you have a question or concern.
